RED SQUARE
Red Square is the main square of Moscow and Russia as a whole, the scene of major events in Russia history, a place traditionally used for manifestations, military parades and festivities.
Its name goes back to the 13 th century. It does not associate with the Bolshevik, as some may think. Originally, the Red Square is indelibly associated with images of stone-faced Soviet Leaders Standing in the bitter cold as panoply of military might rumbles past their review stand atop their review stand atop Lenin's Mausoleum. Although the Square is no longer witness to the imposing parades of May Day, it remains a profoundly impressive space. Delimited by the stark severity of the mausoleum, the expansive facade of the world-famous GUM department store and the exuberant colours of St. Basil's Cathedral, Red square is, and deserves to be, the requisite first stop for any visitor in Moscow.
LENIN MAUSELEUM
The central place on Red Square is occupied by the Lenin Mausoleum. It was built along the principle of the Egyptian pyramids from marble, granite and porphyry, and contains a sarcophagus with the embalmed body of the founder of the Soviet state-Lenin.
