CATHEDRAL OF THE ARCHANGELS
Commissioned by Ivan the Great in 1505, it was the burial place of Russian tsars until the capital of Russia was moved to St. Petersburg in 1712. There is substantial Italian Renaissance flavour to the five-domed church because the star brought in an Italian, Aleviso Novi, to design it. The walls of the cathedral are adorned with frescoes depicting ancient Russian history. Some of the frescoes, which had been painted over by later artists, were rediscovered in the 1950s.
