In the footsteps of Dr Zhivago
Fancy walking in the footsteps of some of Moscow’s cultural elite of the latter half of the 20th century? Then head for Peredelkino!
Peredelkino is a dacha colony (summer cottages), surrounded by forest, that can be found a little over 20 kilometres to the south-west of Moscow.
At the height of its prestige in the 1960s and 1970s, Peredelkino was the favourite weekend retreat for Moscow's cultural elite. It gained its fame and popularity as a writers' colony, with its focal point provided by the dacha of Boris Pasternak, the great Symbolist poet and author of Dr Zhivago. Pasternak ended up living here almost permanently after being offered the Nobel Prize in 1958 (which he was prevented from accepting by the Soviet authorities). He died here in 1960, and is buried among his family in the graveyard next to the village church.

Pasternak's dacha is open to the public as a museum containing the poet's personal effects, including paintings by his father Leonid Pasternak, his collection of Georgian ceramics and his large and varied library. Although mostly of interest to the poet’s many fans, the Pasternak Museum also provides an accurate picture of cultured life in the late Soviet era.
Also well worth a look during any visit to the village is the dacha of Patriarch Aleksei (Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus, and primate of the Russian Orthodox Church). Peredelkino is also surrounded by a fairly extensive pine forest – a great place to go for walks or for cross-country skiing in the winter.
You can get to Peredelkino by ‘elektrichka’ suburban train from Kiev Station (Kievskaya Metro Station). The trip takes about 20 minutes. Pasternak’s dacha is open Thursday to Sunday from 10.00 to 16.00.
