Southern Russia

The territory of the Southern district lies mostly on the Pontic steppe of southern Russia. It borders with Ukraine, the Azov Sea, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea and Kazakhstan. Russia’s main sea resorts of Sochi, Anapa and Gelendzhik are located on the territory of this federal district.

Sothern Russia is characterised by a variety of landscapes (mixed, coniferous, deciduous forests, steppes and subalpine meadows). The Southern district has significant reserves of thermal and mineral waters, coal and oil on the shelf of the Caspian Sea. Krasnodar region is the richest treasure for biological diversity. The Caucasian national park is the second biggest protected territory in Europe and is registered in the UNESCO list of the world’s natural heritage.
