“Everyone wants to experience a fairy tale”, believes Andrey Dellos, the famous creative restaurateur in Moscow who manages several hot spots straight out of a foodie’s dream in the capital, including impressively imperial Turandot, remarkably romantic Café Pushkin and farm-fresh fast-food at Mu-Mu café chain – you’ll find one of the bustling Moo-Moo’s just under the Kremlin walls, tucked away in a grotto across from the World Clock Fountain.
Find your favourite place to escape the mundane and have fun – for example, taste a real delicious lamb leg at Shinok, a tavern-style restaurant which recreates, or at least gives a glimpse of, a lively Ukrainian village feel where a chatty and witty family feels deeply honoured to share a hearty meal with dear guests, parents and kids.
Try a tender, juicy veal in vine leaves at Kazbek, and you’ll realise: it’s the dolma which makes you fall in love with gorgeous Georgian cuisine, as well as with Mr. Mamiya Jojua, the Tbilisi-born chef who nailed the preparation of his homeland delights in an atmospheric flat in Moscow, together with his Mother, a brilliant baker and cook.
Moregrill is a fascinating restaurant project with a “seafood and grill” concept created by charismatic Italian chef Francesco di Marzio. His kitchen team is made up of several superheroes: Chef Thitid 'Ton' from Thailand is the spice and flavour virtuoso, Chef-butcher Renzo Garibaldi from Peru who stands behind the “Surf and Turf”-style menu, Japanese Chef Katsuhiko Kobayashi who has created hundreds of sashimi and sushi for the raw bar, and Vlada Lesnichenko, Russian sommelier wonder woman and author of the wine list. Kamchatka crab legs are simply divine in Moregrill.
Ruski restaurant is breath-taking in at least two ways: first, it floats above the city from the 85th floor of a skyscraper, and second, you will experience amazing traditional Russian hospitality here. Watch your food being prepared in a Russian oven and visit the highest ice bar in the world as a teaser of Russian winter. Moscow looks like a toy city from above; kids will enjoy spending time in a spacious three-level playroom. Overall, it’s a special place for you to fall in love with Russian food, people … and each other.
Japanese celebrity chef Nobuyuki "Nobu" Matsuhisa introduces authentic excellent-quality Japanese food to Moscow at the Nobu restaurant. Being on the pricy side, the restaurant has a quiet ambiance and offers uncompromising quality artisan food in an elegant, nature-inspired interior with soft lighting. If you like your food to be presented like a piece of culinary art, you will be more than satisfied with the Nobu experience.
Warm and Cosy

Adri BBQ is a nice, relaxed restaurant from the celebrity chef Adrian Quetglas. Smoky-flavoured food items on the menu and interesting labels on the wine list will surprise your taste buds, while in its wood-driven, open-space interior, you will immediately feel at home in the calm, laid-back, cheerful atmosphere shared primarily by families and couples. Take your time and enjoy the delightful Mediterranean lunch.
Chef Sergey Eroshenko’s tiny, bustling Chestnaya Kukhnya (Fair Cuisine) restaurant might be a little bit tricky to find – but once you get there, you’ll receive a warm welcome and a genuine culinary experience. In this friendly, cosy restaurant, feel free to ask the chef about the secret behind the amazing dish that you’ve just eaten.
Perhaps there’s simply no secret other than that the chef hand-picks all the ingredients – 95% of them are locally produced – as well as personally curates the creation of the food and the ambiance. The restaurant is a perfect moderately-priced choice for those who value delicious food prepared and served with care. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during evening hours.
Love Khinkali? Welcome to YKPV, or Yest’ Khinkali & Pit’ Vino or “Eat Khinkali & Drink Wine”, a small restaurant with a quiet, cosy veranda amidst Moscow’s church yards which specialises in traditional smooth-textured Georgian dumplings prepared to order. There is a huge variety of delicious fillings including Italian truffles, goat’s cheese, porcini mushrooms, pumpkin, kosher meat and much more – choose what your heart and stomach desires.
While waiting for your food, relax with friends on the veranda, sipping wine and listening to live music. The surrounding area is a beautiful Art Nouveau wonderland, home to Moscow’s elite housing and treasure troves of antique shops.
Trendy and Gastronomic
Who for? For friends, families and colleagues who want to share a delicious meal and try something new, for couples in search of romantic date ideas.
Dr Zhivago is a very Moscow story. Zhivago, the protagonist for Boris Pasternak’s novel, used to live in the house nearby, and Pasternak spent a lot of time there, while restaurants on the ground floor of the hotel where “Dr Zhivago” is located have always attracted hungry Muscovites and tourists.
This “novel about Russian cuisine” has a creative menu and beautiful artworks; here and there in the stylish snow-white interior, you will spot paintings by Malevich, Petrov-Vodkin, Deyneka and Samokhvalov. It is also Moscow society’s favourite place for breakfasts which inspire you with energy for the day. What’s also nice, the delicious dinner won’t cost the earth, despite the Kremlin view.
At lunchtime, visit a popular place in the heart of Moscow, in a contemporary urban landscape park – Zaryadye Gastronomic Centre, a busy open-space restaurant which resembles a food market where you’ll find food items from all over Russia. Take your time tasting and selecting from among the wonderful variety of foods on the menu – ordering food to share can be lots of fun.
Meat lovers should definitely put Voronezh on their list. This is the best meat restaurant in Moscow from top to bottom: on the ground floor you’ll find a snack bar with homemade burgers and magnificent beef cuts; take the elevator one floor up and you’ll find a table-service restaurant which serves “Russian province”-style food – naturally, meat delicacies are in the spotlight, but if you’re in the mood for seafood or duck, the chef will prepare that for you, too – all from local products.
The next floor hosts a legendary “Meat Club” for true meat gourmets – head there for your portion of pheasant patties with cowberry sauce – and the soft lighting, and the live piano. In summer, the top-floor terrace offers a fantastic view. Book a table in advance: the restaurant is very popular.
Italian fine-dining restaurant Semifreddo is another fashionable spot for going out. Sicilian-born Michelin-starred chef Nino Graziano places emphasis on excellent food and impeccable service. Nino and sous-chef Giuseppe often go out into the restaurant to chat with guests, many of whom are loyal customers. Be it an octopus carpaccio or home-made pasta with truffles, all will be cooked and served with personal attention to you. Select a wine that best complements your meal from the chef’s delightful wine collection of more than 700 labels.
Because we like Italian food in Russia (see Food and Drink in Russia), here is another top-quality Italian restaurant on fashionable Malaya Bronnaya Street: Maritozzo. In the morning, it’s a cosy, quiet place to have breakfast on the ground floor, so give in to the temptation and start your day with a flavoursome Italian coffee, Russian apple cake with ice cream made in-house – or later, when the place starts filling up with guests, head up to the first floor to enjoy a proper Mediterranean lunch or dinner with a lively buzz surrounding you as you watch in wonderment as your dish is prepared in the open kitchen. You will be pleased to find great wines on the list by the glass or bottle.
Wine & Gastronomy

If you’re looking for excellent-quality wine and a fine-dining experience at a reasonable price, Grand Cru by Adrian Quetglas is a smart choice. This small wine bar has a modern design and intimate, almost homely atmosphere. Friendly sommeliers will help you choose the perfect wine from their fantastic collection – matched with a creative degustation set from the Michelin-starred chef Adrian Quetglas, the tasting experience is bliss.
Megobari (“friend” in Georgian) is a true gem of Georgian food and drink. Start with an assortment of Georgian rolls, share a freshly baked Khatchapuri cheese pie or two and proceed with a delicious meat on a skewer. The beverages menu invites you to a wonderland of Georgian wines, spirits and cocktails, and this time the house wine will leave you speechless – it’s so good! Best time with friends guaranteed – book a table in advance.
Romantic and cosy, Winil Wine Bar is the go-to place to taste excellent wines – the owner, Michael, loves the good old French classics, and you’ll find many samples to invoke your inner sommelier with the help of a friendly bar team. Food quality keeps up with that of the wines, featuring an irresistible honey cake and probably the best octopus in the city. In the evening, Winil is full (so we recommend booking in advance), but it somehow doesn’t feel crowded or loud, but rather relaxed and inspiring. A special place to spend time with your special people to a soft jazz soundtrack.
World Cuisine Journeys
Who for? For explorers of world gastronomic delights; for travellers curious about multicultural Moscow’s food scene.
Uzbekistan has been around for a while now – since 1951. After restoration with the help of Tashkent masters, the restaurant opened its massive exquisitely ornamented wooden doors again to delight Moscow citizens and guests with traditional Uzbek food. “Plov” is the king of the national cuisine, and there are many other Central Asian delights for you to choose from such as crispy fried chebureki, juicy manti dumplings or rich and flavoursome laghman noodle soup.
One of the best places to eat Georgian cuisine in Moscow is Khatchapuri city cafe. Georgian cuisine has only one drawback: after 2 hours, you want to taste it again. Fish in vine leaves, lamb ribs, pkhali rolls and all-cheese khatchapuri pies – meat lovers and vegetarians alike will find plenty of amazing options on the menu. There is also a children’s menu “for citizens below the age of 10”. The concept of the friendly city cafes has become so popular that there are now several “Khatchapuri” spots in Moscow.
Some say that the best local restaurant is the one where locals eat – we agree. Armenian cuisine Gayane’s is always full of Armenian families who feel at home there. You will, too – the host Gayane is friendly, charming and warm; she likes to experiment with traditional recipes and her team of waiters is great. Go for a khash soup or Lyulya kebab; they simply melt in your mouth. A nice place to visit with family; if you come on your own, there are bookshelves with books in many different languages to spend time while you’re waiting for your meal.
Smart comfort food
Who for? For friends or colleagues looking for a casual lunch or drink with a twist. For hungry explorers of the city in search of a nice place to have a proper meal.
Three people met in a bar: an Australian (Glen Ballis), a Russian (Alexandr Oganesov) and an Italian (William Lamberti). And so they thought: why not create a tiny café with international food to share? It was a good idea: Glenuill took off as one of the funkiest lunch places in Moscow. Shrimp burgers, grilled pear with marinated grapes, veal medallions with hummus and pita – the menu is being reinvented all the time according to the season, but it’s always well-balanced and imaginative.
Gastro pub Wing or Leg is a tiny place to check out when you’re at Gorky Park. Look for a flying pig sign to find it. The place offers great-value pub-style food and the menu changes regularly; try chicken wing salad, duck with falafel, roast potatoes and Belgian (and not only) beers. Casual and bustling, this is a cool place to refresh yourself after ice skating or running in Gorky Park.
Just 15 minutes’ walk from the New Tretyakov gallery, you’ll find a wonderful small brasserie called Geraldine. This cosy place is a true oasis for gourmets who appreciate traditional recipes and the art of cooking as much as it is a foodie’s delight with unusual product combinations. Mid-century style “Plush Paris” was carefully designed with authentic lighting and decor – at the same time, it has a fresh feel, striving to be impeccable but always with a chuckle. Their breakfasts are our absolute favourite.
